A bathroom sanctuary both restorative and functional.
Project Highlights
-
Structural Restoration
Significant water damage was discovered behind the shower walls and beneath the shower pan, requiring extensive reconstruction to restore the integrity of the space and bring it back to current standards.

Thoughtful Accessibility
A wider 34-inch shower door was selected to provide easier, more comfortable access for the homeowner and his walker.
-
A Personal Spa Retreat
A spacious steam shower brings the comfort and restorative qualities of a spa into the home, creating a place to relax and unwind.
-
Aging-in-Place Features
A range of accessibility and safety features were thoughtfully integrated, including grab bars, a curbless shower entry, a built-in shower bench, enhanced floor traction, and a handheld shower head. Each detail was selected to support comfort, stability, and independence as the homeowner continues to enjoy his home.
-
Functional, Integrated Storage
Custom storage solutions make room for everyday essentials and personal device charging while transforming previously underutilized space into practical storage for linens and other bathroom necessities.
The Story
At 90 years old, this homeowner envisioned a bathroom sanctuary that felt as restorative as it was functional. As his needs evolved, the goal was to create a space that would support his comfort, safety, and independence while allowing him to continue enjoying the home he loves. The result is a thoughtful balance of timeless design, everyday practicality, and spa-inspired luxury.
A soft, neutral palette rooted in warm, earthy tones sets a calming foundation. Textured deco tile in the shower introduces subtle dimension and visual interest, adding layers of character without overwhelming the simplicity of the design. The overall aesthetic feels quiet and inviting, creating a space that encourages relaxation.
At the heart of the bathroom, a spacious steam shower offers a personal retreat for rest and rejuvenation. A wider 34-inch entry accommodates the homeowner’s walker, while the curbless transition allows for easier access. A built-in bench, strategically placed grab bars, and a handheld shower head provide additional support and flexibility, making the shower comfortable to navigate and enjoy. The steam feature adds another layer of everyday luxury, offering a welcome place to unwind and soothe tired muscles and joints.
The existing single-sink vanity was replaced with a double-sink configuration, creating additional room for daily routines. Illuminated mirrors provide integrated task lighting, while custom cabinetry was stained to complement the existing wood doors in the primary suite. This thoughtful coordination helps the updated bathroom feel cohesive with the surrounding home rather than separate from it.
Safety and functionality extend beyond the shower. An additional traction-enhancing treatment was applied to the flooring to improve grip, and previously underutilized space was transformed into purposeful storage for linens and everyday essentials. Dedicated space for charging personal devices keeps frequently used items organized and accessible.
Ultimately, this project is about more than updating a bathroom. It is about creating a space that honors the homeowner’s changing needs without compromising on beauty, comfort, or dignity. By bringing together considered design, practical accessibility, and the restorative qualities of a personal steam shower, this bathroom supports aging in place while making everyday routines feel a little more effortless and a lot more luxurious.
